Influenced by Throbbing Gristle and 'other 70s and 80s industrial bands, Jared Hendriksen (vocals, programming) and Dylan Thomas More (programming) were introduced to each other at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. in the late '80s. The duo began demo-ing material as Chemlab
and later recorded their debut, Ten Ton Pressure EP illegally at the National Geographic studios in 1990. The attention of Trent Reznor and a tour with Nine Inch Nails the following year gained them a broad audience. After signing with Metal Blade, Hendriksen and More assembled a full band (guitarist Steve Watson, bassist Ned Wahl and drummer Mark Kermanj) to round out their sound and to record Burn Out at the Hydrogen Bar, which was released in 1994 and gained them worldwide recognition.
